Hey there! October is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’re all about giving your mind (and body!) the TLC it deserves. At POWER we know that wellness goes way beyond lifting weights or running on the treadmill. It’s about feeling good inside and out. So, let’s chat about how you can boost your mental health, have fun while doing it, and most importantly connect with yourself and others!

We all know that exercise is good for you. But did you know it’s also a game-changer for your mental health? Yes, those endorphins that get released when you work out? They’re basically feel good hormones. So, whether you’re crushing a POWER class, doing yoga by the pool, or just taking a run around town, moving your body can help shake off stress, anxiety, and depression.

POWER Boosts.

Start Small, Stay Consistent: You don’t need to commit to hours in the gym. Start with 30 minutes of light exercise—whether it’s a brisk walk, a cycle, or some floor exercises.

Mix It Up: Change your routine regularly. Try yoga or a swim to promote mindfulness and relaxation, or interval training for a great mood boost.

Listen to Your Body: Not feeling it? That’s okay. Do what feels good, and don’t force it. Rest days are just as important!

Mental wellness is holistic—it encompasses a good diet, regular sleep, and relaxation. At POWER, we focus on creating a balanced experience that combines both physical and mental well-being.

POWER Naps.

Getting enough sleep is one of the most underrated (but most important) parts of mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to keep those stress levels down and your mood up.

Wind Down the Right Way: Swap the late-night scroll for a book or some light stretching. Your brain will thank you.

Set the Mood: Low lighting, a comfy mattress, and cosy pillows make all the difference for quality sleep.

Breathe Easy: Try deep breathing exercises or a quick meditation before bed to calm your mind.

The POWER of Community.

Like us all, mental health thrives in supportive environments. Being part of a community, whether through group fitness classes or wellness workshops, creates a sense of belonging. At POWER Gym, we encourage our members to connect, whether that’s through one of our monthly events, our run clubs or one of our POWER class concepts. Chat to our teams on your next visit to find our more!

What to Do When You Need Help

Sometimes, even with the best routines, life gets overwhelming. If you’re struggling and need someone to talk to, that’s okay. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Here are some amazing resources offering support:

Sunday 29th October 2023 marks the day I ran my first ever marathon. 42.2km around the streets of Dublin with thousands of runners doing their thing – what an experience! It’s safe to say that this day will be one of those memories etched in my mind forever. You know those significant memories of joy you have? Well crossing that finish line at Merrion Square is definitely one of mine.

In this blog post, we’ll delve into the experience of running my first marathon and explore five essential tips to guide you, including deciding to run, hiring a coach, enjoying the process, not worrying too much about time, and staying patient.

1. Setting the Stage: The Decision to Run a Marathon

My journey to running the Dublin marathon started with a pivotal decision this time last year – the commitment to the training and mental preparation required. This is where the excitement begins, as you embark on an incredible journey that will push your physical and mental limits. A marathon is no joke but you will be surprised at how quickly you progress as a runner once sleep, nutrition and training are on point. I have always said it would be nice to say I’ve ran at least one marathon in my life so I asked myself, why not Dublin 2023?

2. Hire a Coach: A Game-Changer in Marathon Training

One of the most valuable decisions that I made before beginning training back at the end of July was to hire a coach. A qualified coach can provide you with a structured training plan, tailored to your fitness level and goals. I had the pleasure of working with an incredible coach and old team mate, Conor Wynne-Walsh (@crua_conditioning) during my marathon journey.

Here’s why a coach is a game-changer:

Expert Guidance: As an experienced marathon runner, Conor brought knowledge, experience, and expertise to my training. As a first timer, he helped me navigate the complexities of marathon training, ensuring you’re working on the right areas of your fitness ranging from easy runs, tempo’s and finding a marathon pace.

Accountability: Knowing that someone is monitoring your progress and offering guidance can help you stay on track. Coaches hold you accountable for your training, reducing the likelihood of slacking off which can happen over the course of a few months.

Injury Prevention: Coaches can help you avoid common training mistakes that may lead to injuries. One mistake that I made at the beginning was running at a faster pace than my ‘Easy’ pace, which could definitely have led to an injury as the volume would have been too much. They’ll also guide you through proper warm-ups, stretching, and recovery strategies.

Mental Support: Running a marathon is as much about mental strength as physical fitness. Coaches provide the motivation and psychological support needed to stay focused and determined during your training.

3. Embrace the Journey, Not Just the Finish Line

While crossing the marathon finish line is the ultimate goal, it’s essential to remember that the entire marathon training journey is an experience in itself. Every long run, every early morning, every moment you push yourself – they all contribute to your growth as a runner and as an individual. Don’t just focus on the destination; cherish each step of the journey.

One way I found helped me to embrace the journey was firstly to find a purpose and secondly to find someone to train with. Having done some long runs on my own, it can be lonely out there at times running up to three hours at a time but luckily I was part of a group of incredible people running to raise funds for Debra Ireland, a charity who raises awareness for EB, a rare skin condition. This created another goal for the six of us already running for an individual reason and also helped with the consistency!

4. Don’t Obsess Over Time: Enjoy the Process

It’s easy to get caught up in setting a time goal for your first marathon and it was usually the first question I was asked when telling somebody I was running. While having a target time is motivating, it’s crucial not to let it overshadow the joy of running. Understand that your first marathon is an achievement in its own right, regardless of the time it takes you to finish. Remember, less that 1% of the world’s population will ever complete a marathon! Don’t let time-related pressure steal the joy from the experience.

5. Consistency and Patience: Keys to Success

Consistency is the key to a successful marathon as well as patience, patience and more patience! Ever hear the quote “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!”? Stick to your training plan and make running a part of your routine. However, be patient with yourself. Progress in marathon training can be gradual, and there will be ups and downs. 80% of the work is aerobic, longer and lower intensity work with just 20% high speed anaerobic work. Understand that improvement takes time, and setbacks are part of the journey. The key is to keep moving forward. Having a 3 week trip in the middle of my training as well as balancing another sport simultaneously while still trying to have a social life was a difficult balance, but remember your purpose, and keep showing up!

In Conclusion: The Marathon is Just the Beginning

Running your first marathon is an incredible achievement that will leave you with a profound sense of accomplishment. The lessons you learn along the way – perseverance, resilience, and the ability to push your limits – will extend far beyond the finish line. Hire a coach, enjoy the journey, let go of time-related worries, and maintain consistency and patience. During the process, I was extremely grateful to be reminded that I had the ability to move my body as well as I can and not everybody is in that position, which is something to reflect on. Remember, the marathon is just the beginning of your running adventure, and there are many more milestones to conquer in the future.

Keep running, keep growing, and keep living your passion for the sport.

Remember to Cool Down After Workouts

To optimize and enhance your training performance, there are several factors to consider, including proper nutrition, hydration, rest, and recovery. While it may be tempting to push yourself to the limit every time you hit the gym or engage in physical activity, it is important to remember that recovery is just as crucial as the workout itself.

One way to enhance your training performance is to incorporate a cool down and post-workout stretching routine into your exercise regimen. Scientific research has consistently shown that incorporating cool down stretches into your post-workout routine can provide numerous benefits for physical and psychological health, promote recovery, prevent injuries and improve overall health.

Cool Down After Workout Key Benefits

Decrease risk of injury: By stretching and lengthening your muscles this can improve your flexibility and reduce your risk of injury. Increased flexibility can improve your range of motion and reduce muscle tension which can help prevent strains and sprains. This is particularly important for athletes and fitness enthusiasts who engage in activities that require a wide range of motion or put a significant amount of strain on their muscles.

Reduce muscle soreness: During a heavy workout session, the body produces lactic acid, which can lead to soreness and stiffness if it is not properly cleared. The accumulation of lactic acid can result in delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which can negatively impact subsequent workouts and impede athletic performance. However, a well-designed cool down routine that includes stretching and light activity can help reduce the build-up of lactic acid by increasing blood flow to the affected muscles, which can help remove waste products and deliver nutrients and oxygen to promote recovery.

Promote relaxation: When you engage in physical activity, your body produces adrenaline and cortisol, also known as the “stress hormones”. These hormones help to energize your body and prepare it for physical activity, but they can also lead to muscle tension and an increased heart rate. Cool down stretches can help to counteract these effects by promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. When you stretch your muscles, you help to release tension that may have built up during your workout, allowing your body to physically relax. In addition, the act of stretching can be a meditative and calming activity, which can help to calm your mind and reduce stress levels.

Cool Down After Workout Key Pointers

Avoid bouncing: Bouncing during stretching can lead to injury and can cause your heart rate to increase, which is contrary to the purpose of a cool down. Instead, hold the stretch for a few seconds and release it slowly.

Hold the stretch: Unlike during a workout, holding a stretch for an extended period is necessary to allow the muscle to fully release and relax. Aim to hold each stretch for at least 10-30 seconds.

Do not skip stretching: Incorporating stretching into your workout routine, both pre- and post-workout, is vital for maximizing the benefits of a cool down. Skipping your stretching routine can lead to decreased flexibility, increased risk of injury, and delayed recovery. It is recommended to set aside at least 10-15 minutes for post-workout stretching.

By following these pointers, you can ensure that you get the most out of your post-workout stretching routine and optimize your recovery and athletic performance. Overall, incorporating cool down stretches into your post-workout routine can be a valuable tool for promoting recovery, reducing muscle soreness, improving flexibility and reducing the risk of injury.
